Designing an exhibition is a challenging task. Starting from brainstorming in search of a concept that would eventually house a group of designers with different aesthetics and unique ideas. Then moving forward to the actual execution of the pieces, the duration of the artwork shown, and every detail of the modes of display we want to use as a cohesive thread throughout the exhibition.

DESIGN PROCESS

Due to my previous job, I had some years of experience with the exhibition-making process and felt comfortable being fully engaged in the process. Also, my father has a wood-shop for personal projects that I constantly help with, so it made sense for me to step in and help design and construct the more prominent objects that required carpentry and mechanics to execute.

Thus, I started flushing out ideas as sketches with measurements, possible layouts, structures, and accurate details on building processes and steps. The blueprints were also under the influence of a tight budget to get the materials we needed to build. After designing a dream structure, we had to pivot to go through a cheaper route yet sturdy enough to still be a successful structure.

After meeting with the wood shop manager and running some ideas through the leading team, we decided on building 13 frames that would hold two posters of forty by sixty inches Duratrans posters each and a forty-eight feet long table that would showcase all the editorial work we needed.

Then, I had to create a system where I could clearly teach the team of builders the step by step of the building to achieve the best result possible. Teaching my classmates was so much fun, and I was impressed by some of their talents and ability to understand mechanics pretty quickly. The techniques I used to teach were to run through one of the frames step by step with a team of two people, clearly state the measurements, strategies, and tips to better construct, and then let them do the next one independently. I would always stay near to answer any questions and offer words of encouragement.
