Secrets, secrets are no fun unless you tell everyone.

This collaborative project between Nina Gozzi and I started and was inspired by the famous TV show “Gossip Girl.” We started breaking down the central theme of this teenage drama to understand what was interesting and how we could turn this inspiration into an installation.

Sketching process. After the sketching process, we honed our concept. For us, the most exciting thing was how the whole show is built around secrets, sometimes wrongfully shared by others. We then wanted to create a safe space where people could walk by and anonymously share a secret that might be weighing on them.

Nothing stays hidden for long, xoxo.

DESIGN PROCESS

1. SKETCHING

The Process of sketching is a step that sometimes is overlooked, but it allows you to flush out every idea, the good, the bad, and the ugly. Through this excessive, the project started to have a better shape and plan for it to be constructed.

2. CONSTRUCTION

Private vs. Public. The structure is light and see-through to evoke this duality between private and public. You might feel enclosed in the room, but the delicate weaving makes it transparent, and thus people on the outside can see what is happening.

3. VINTAGE TECHNOLOGY

Since the original TV show was launched in 2007, technology has changed quite a bit, from flip phones to 5G iPhones, from flyers to Facebook events, from myspace to Instagram. The design of the tags includes this nostalgic flip phone used by many of us (at least people around our 30s). The back wall resembles a street wall with hundreds of band flyers and posters stacking on top of each other like it once was done. The designs were made in the risograph printer, a dated technology refurbished by designers to create unique pieces because of its printing quality. Risograph prints. Overall, this interactive installation invites the audience to decompress by writing a secret and enjoying other people’s secrets.
