As a proud Peruvian, I constantly look inside my culture for new aesthetics, techniques, and inspiration. One thing that commonly stands out is that in Andean cultures, where people used to speak Quechua spoken language predominantly, they narrate their stories, history, and culture through weaving and embroidery due to the lack of a written system pair for Quechua. Through this project, I had a modern take on embroidering history by creatively adding type to enhance a story I wanted to tell.
DESIGN PROCESS
1. ILLUSTRATION
I decided to narrate a group of stories about Perú in a contemporary take on embroidered history. The illustration process is one that I enjoy the most, and it is my comfort zone, and I allow myself much more creative freedom and expression when using this medium. I started with simple line illustrations to create a frame for my work and then played with color and typography over the following organic shapes. Readability was not a priority, but it is interesting how you can begin the reading order differently and still get the whole picture.

2. EMBROIDERY PROCESS
Hand-made objects or projects are constantly downvalued, but through this process, I understood the time needed to make a quality product, making it a high-worth object.
